Week 5 of 8, Perspectives on Psychology (Part 1)

We are halfway through the course. We have explored a number of different perspectives on psychology and how they are related in a variety of ways to some of the foundational perspectives such as Behaviorism, a scientific branch of psychology which focused on objectively observable behaviour such as socialisation, i.e. how behaviour is conditioned through the environment either through everyday interactions or through the systematic use of punishments and rewards.

The other foundational perspectives we’ve discussed is Psychoanalysis, which is the branch of psychology founded by Sigmund Freud.

This week I will begin to introduce Carl Jung who was a close colleague and student of Freud’s. Jung went on to develop his school of psychology, generally known as Jungian psychology or Analytical psychology. In this session we will not go deep into Jung’s psychology because of midterm but I want to introduce his work in the context of Cognitive Psychology and Cognitive Science.
