Week 5 Cognitive Science and Carl Jung

This week we will begin to talk about Carl Jung, although not in any great depth. I’m bringing him in here because the famous Canadian psychologist, John Vervaecke, suggests that Jung is a prophet of the Meaning Crisis. Vervaecke created a series of fifty videos in his complex work called Awakening from the Meaning Crisis. Try watching the first episode linked below.

This week I will begin with introducing the Cognitive Revolution in Psychology. This is something quite new in Psychology in the computer age. In the 1950s, scientists began to research how the mind works by comparing it to information processing in a machine. Many scientists were hard set against this idea, they strongly believed that it was not possible to study the mind because it could not be objectively observed or measured. Cognitive psychology proved them wrong. At the time it was characterised as a revolution is scientific psychology. Week 5 introduces Cognitive Psychology as a brand-new core perspective in psychology that was introduced by scientists.
